The Health and Disability Commissioner has found that two midwives breached professional standards in their care of a women whose baby died in a home birth in July 2005.
Ron Paterson says he is satisfied the mother's back-up midwife, Ms D, adequately monitored the foetal heart rate until half an hour before the baby was born. However, he says when the heart rate could no longer be detected, Ms D assumed this was because the baby was behind the mother's pubic bone and did not recommend a referral to a specialist.
