How Do We Describe Personality
Let’s start with the idea that an individual’s personality is a system of some kind…
…and a system is any set of interrelated parts. For example:
o The solar system…
o The human muscular system…
o A home’s electrical system…
Personality ???
What Is Personality?
Diverse systems all can be described in a common fashion, in the sense of following a standard outline.
To describe a particular system, we typically talk about its
o Definition and location
o Parts
o Organization, and
o Development
How Do We Describe Personality
For example, as applied to the solar system…
Definition and location:
Our solar system includes the sun and the objects bound to it by gravity.
Parts:
The sun, eight planets, three dwarf planets, more than 100 moons, asteroids, and other objects
Organization:
The system is organized with the sun at the center, the planets, dwarf planets, and asteroid belt in orbit around it.
Development:
The system was formed during the gravitational contraction of a pre-solar molecular cloud. Today, planets follow regular paths around the sun at predictable rates.
